What does it mean to be a poster artist? For Benjamin Nelson, it means putting colour into what can be an otherwise dreary, visual wasteland. A long-time local of Kingston, Ontario, Nelson’s artistic practice has adapted to the demands of the not-so-big city. He is not only a poster artist, but also a print maker, collage expert, and graphic designer. All together his body of work documents the development of his own style, and reflects the history and changes in the music and arts community around him. Nelson not only seeks to redefine the landscape, but his work also challenges the definitions of what he does – a poster is more than a vehicle for information, it is also the medium of his art. After undergoing the disillusionment of institutional, technology and profit driven higher education, Nelson returned to his hometown and began a regimen of self-education in handmade design and printing. His work is now both part of and stands out from the Kingston cityscape - striking silkscreened prints, jagged shapes and geometric designs: full colour hype.
